We are still in Naples, where Marie Sophie defends her kingdom against Garibaldi.

Marie Sophie had many glamorous titles in her life. She was born as a Duchess in Bavaria and crowned as the Queen of the Two Sicilies, but she is remembered as the heroine of Gaeta. As I mentioned in my previous article, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies existed until the freedom fighter Giuseppe Garibaldi took over the region in 1861, forcing the royal couple into exile. However, Marie and her husband, King Francesco II, did not leave quietly. They fled to the Monte Orlando fortress in Gaeta, near Naples, from where they resisted Garibaldi's troops. Marie Sophie was determined to defend her kingdom and fought on the front lines against Garibaldi's forces, as well as caring for the wounded in the hospitals. Even after their final escape from Naples, when they found shelter in Rome, it is said that Marie Sophie still kept in touch with the resistance movement and did not give up hope of returning to Naples. Unfortunately, this was denied to her. The royal couple ultimately fled abroad. After many stops in Paris, Possenhofen, and Augsburg, she died in 1925 in Munich.
